The Goldilocks of bike bags
As many cyclists know, carrying food, electrolytes, extra layers, a wallet, and essential tools can leave your jersey pockets overflowing. The natural solution is a bag mounted to the frame. Unfortunately, most frame bags are huge, bulky, and ill-fitting due to high volume being the main design parameter. I saw a need for a bag that was big enough for my day trip essentials, but that didn’t flop about and rub thighs while riding.
Bag #1
After 1000 miles of use, the size and shape were perfect for food and extra layers. However, the zippers jammed, the bag lacked structure, and the attachment method was crude. Bag #2 was imminent
Bag #2/3
The demands were different for this bag set as they needed to fit a 48cm frame (which is really small). These bags solved the zipper jam issue and further understanding of material properties.
Bag #4
On this bag, I adjusted the height of the zipper on the side panels, resulting in items falling out more easily when the bag is unzipped. The execution was clean; however, the bag still lacked structure, and the Velcro loops gave a place for debris to rub against the paint on the frame.
Bag #5
This bag brought all my learnings together in a way that didn’t work at all. This was the first time I integrated plastic stiffeners into the construction, and I put in far too much, not to mention it looked terrible inside. I also changed the bag mounting to a shock cord-based system which was the highlight of the bag.
Bag #6
This is the best frame bag I have ever used. This quick disconnect shock -cord mounting reduced wear on the paint while making it only take two minutes to attach and detach the bag. The bag has plastic stiffening on the top and bottom panel that side into pockets post sewing. In addition, there is a metal stiffening rod integrated into the area just above the zipper; this gives enough structure to load and unload the bag while riding easily.
Bar Bag #1.5
Bar bags on the market rub and bounce all over the place; hard-mounted solutions are usually heavy or give poor accessibility to the rider. This bag and rack solution weighs less than most traditional soft bar bags, opens to the top with a magnetic clasp, and has integrated suspension via the shock cord wrapping.
